With reference to my Despatch No. 379 of
the 26th. October last, I have now the honour to transmit for
your approval the plans of the proposed extension to the Post
Office at Shanghai.

The land upon which the extension is to
be built belongs to the Imperial Government and I enclose for
your information a copy of a letter which I addressed to His
Majesty's Minister at Peking in December on the subject of
Onclosure 1.

the terms upon which the land might be leased to this Govern-
ment, together with a copy of Sir Ernest Sator's reply with
its enclosures. It is urged by the Surveyor to His Majesty's
Office of Works that the rental of Taels 1,200 per annum is a
reasonable one in view of the great value of the property, and
in view of the fact that the Agency is a source of profit to
this Colony, I have not felt justified in further pressing
my point that the Imperial interests served by the Office
should be recognised by the lease of the land now required for
it at a greatly reduced rental.

I have therefore to ask your authority to
